Iran With The Bomb, Or To Bomb Iran?

Is the U.S. trying to look irresolute and non-threatening? Obama said that a military strike against Iran was always “on the table”. Now one of his officials, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy, speaking from Singapore, says: “It’s off the table in the near term.” Is this simply tailoring for different audiences, or does it mark a genuine change in policy? Either way, this is not helpful.
“Right now the focus is a combination of engagement and pressure in the form of sanctions,” Flournoy said. “We have not seen Iran engage productively in response.”
Well, of course not! The only type of sanctions that would hurt them is on petroleum, and petroleum products. (This is yet to be done.) The U.S. is fast approaching a horrible choice: between Iran with the nuclear bomb, or to bomb Iran, as Sarkozy and Kouchner have put it.
